3.7.1.1 Cylinder safety relief valve. - A suitable spring loaded relief valve shall be located
in the fuel reservoir. This valve shall be set to open at a pressure of not more than 375 p.s.i.
3.7.1.2 Cylinder sealing valve. - Cylinders shall be equipped with an internal self-sealing
valve to prevent leakage of fuel when burner unit is not attached.
3.7.1.3 Dirt Cover. - The fitting to which the burner unit is attached during operation
shall be provided with a suitable cover, threadad or snap-on type, to keep dirt out of the cylinder
head when burner unit is not attached.
3.7.2 Burner unit. - The burner unit shall be of brass or copper. the burner unit shall be
provided with a regulating control valve for adjusting the flame to the desired height. The adjust-
ment needle in the control valve may be made of steel. A length of copper or brass tubing at least
3 inches long by approximately 5/16 inch outside diameter by 3/16 inch inside diameter shall be
attached to the burner unit by means of a compression nut. The burner end of the tubing shall be
externally threaded for attaching the utility burner or the pencil burner heed.
3.7.3 pencil burner head. - the pencil burner head shall be of brain or copper. It shall contain
a small orifice to produce a pencil point flame. The lower end of the pencil burner head shall be
internally threaded for connecting to the end of the burner head tubing. ,
3.7.4 Utility burner heed. - The utility burner head shall be similar to the pencil
burner head described above except that the head shall be provided with l large orifice to produce
a flame suitable for work requiring a greater volume of heat. The lower end of the utility burner
head shall be internally threaded for connecting to the end of the burner head tubing.
3.7.5 Solderi ng tip. - The soldering tip shall have a housing of brass or copper, with a
replaceable copper tip. Means shall be provided for securing the soldering tip to the pencil
burner bead.
3.7.6 Flame spreader. - The flame spreader shall be fan shaped to produce a wide flame to cover
a wide area. Means shall be provided for securing the flame spreader to the utility burner bead.
3.7.7 Flint lighter. - The flint lighter shall be of metal containing l replaceable flint. It
shall be capable of producing an Ignition spark to light the torch.
3.7.8 Carrying case. - The carrying case shall be of sheet metal, finished with a good grade of
enamel or lacquer. The carting case shall be of such size to hold the fuel cylinder and all
component parts of the kit. The case shall be equipped with a hinged cover, means for holding
the cover in a closed position, and a carrying handle.
3.8 Threads, - All threaded parts shall be in the inch system and shall conform to National
Bureau of Standards Handbook H28.
3.9 Workmanship. Workmanship of the soldering torch kits shall be of the quality prevailing
among manufacturers normally producing soldering torch kits of the type specified herein.
4.
QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1 Responsibility for inspection. - Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase
order, the supplier is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified
herein. Except as otherwise specified, the supplier may utilize his own facilities or any commercial
laboratory acceptable to the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the
inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure
supplies and service conform to prescribed requirements.
4.2 Sampling for lot acceptance.
4.2.1 Inspection lot. - All soldering torch kits offered for delivery at one time shall be
considered a lot for the purpose of acceptance, inspection and tests.
4.2.2 sampling for visual and dimensional inspection. - A sample of soldering torch kits
shall be taken by the inspector from each inspection lot of material offered for Government Inspection
of visual and dimensional characteristics in accordance with MIL-STD- 105. The inspection level shall
be II and the AQL 1.5 percent defective.
